Want to hear a huge number? 448,647. That is how many ASINs Amazon says are meltable in their warehouses. Beginning on April 15, 2022 and running until October 15, 2022, Amazon will not have any meltable inventory in its warehouses. If you sell a chocolate or other food item that melts under high temperatures, you need to submit a removal order as soon as possible, or Amazon will dispose of your products!
What is meltable inventory?
Amazon defines meltable as any heat sensitive product, like chocolate, gummies, jelly based and wax based products. Amazon says any product which cannot withstand 155 degree temperatures are meltable and should be removed.
I sell one of the products mentioned, but I think my product won't melt.
Amazon offers exemption requests. If you believe your product should be exempted, you will need the following:
Specific product or ASIN
Explicit confirmation that the ASIN can be stored at temperatures up to 155 degrees (Fahrenheit) for long periods. This must be on a letterhead from the manufacturer
Point of contact at the manufacturer for verification
My product will melt, how can I maintain sales?
It's never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket. Since you will lose FBA ability for half of the year, you need other strategies that keep your sales figures up. As long as you can safely deliver the product to customers without melting, you have options.
On Amazon, be sure you have all meltable products with a Fulfilled By Merchant option. When customers come looking for you, they still find your product for sale, and you just need to handle the shipment. Brand recognition is important here, as you do not want to lose customers who look for your brand specifically.
Also consider the other marketplaces. Ebay and Wal-Mart are the most popular choices. If you are able to process Amazon FBM orders, you already have the infrastructure to process Ebay and Wal-Mart orders as well.
Other marketplaces have their own algorithms and rules, so if you have never sold there before, do your research or consider partnering with a trusted agency.
